Chinese Premier Li Keqiang has raised a five-point proposal to promote peace and stability in the South China Sea.
Speaking in Malaysia while attending the East Asia Summit, Li asked all countries to follow the principles of the UN charter and defend the outcome of World War II and the post-war order, and jointly safeguard peace and stability in the world and the region.

He also called on countries to adhere to the principles of international law to peacefully settle sovereign and jurisdictional disputes through consultation and negotiation.
Li urged China and ASEAN countries to implement the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea and improve regional mechanisms for mutual trust and cooperation. He said countries outside of the region should play a constructive role and not add to tensions.
He concluded his proposal by calling all parties to exercise and uphold the freedom of navigation and overflights in the South China Sea in accordance with international law.
