Opposition candidate Mauricio Macri has won the the presidential runoff, with the ruling party candidate Daniel Scioli conceding defeat.
The official election body says with returns in from three-quarters of all polling stations, Macri from the opposition Cambiemos, or Let's Change party in English, led with 53 percent of the votes. While Daniel Scioli gained 47 percent of the ballot. Macri went into the polls after losing closely in the first round vote on October 25 to Scioli, an ally of the outgoing President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner. That result forced Argentina's first ever presidential runoff. Mayor of Buenos Aires Macri is trying to end 12 years of leftist rule with promising to set Latin America's third biggest economy on a more free-market course. More than 32 million Argentineans were eligible to vote in the presidential runoff on Sunday. The winner will take office early next month.
