France's Defence Ministry says it has launched its first air strikes from the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier in the Mediterranean Sea.
The seven-hour bombings targeted Islamic State group in the Iraqi cities of Ramadi and Mosul. The ministry said two air force Mirage 2000s were engaged in the mission. Meanwhile, four Rafale fighter jets were sent from the carrier on Monday afternoon. The action came ten days after coordinated attacks in Paris which left 130 people dead.
France has ramped up its fight against Islamic State since the attacks and its planes have carried out a number of raids on Raqa, Syria. The 26 jet fighters on the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier triple France's capacity to carry out strikes in the region.
