Japan is planning to spend a record 5 trillion yen in 2016 on its defense budget. The staggering amount of over US$41 billion, is intended to upgrade Japan’s military equipment.
The new budget will come into force in April 2016, and will extend for one year. The boost will be used to support the US military's Asian presence, and purchase military hardware.
This is not the first time that Japan has raised its defense budget, to keep up with regional and international concerns.
Ever since Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe took office for a second time in 2012, Tokyo has regularly updated its fiscal plans.
The latest adjustment marks the fourth yearly raise in the country’s defense budget in as many years.
