The first G20 Sherpa Meeting has opened in Beijing, with senior officials discussing preparations for September’s summit in Eastern China’s Hangzhou city.
Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi said China wants to enhance the role of the G20 from a mechanism tackling crisis, to one exercising long-term, effective management. The state councilor also outlined China's goals for hosting the summit this year. He said one target is to “renovate the mechanism building, forge a cooperative platform and provide a firm guarantee of the transformation of the G20.”

“It is China's main aim to keep the economy running with rationality, and to establish healthier and longer-lasting growth. This also complies with the global economic trend. A continuous mid to high growth rate for China’s economy will provide a strong engine for the world's economic growth, and will make important contributions to a strong, sustainable and balanced global growth,” Yang said.
