Five French Foreign Legionnaires have been killed and six others injured in an avalanche during a training exercise in the Alps.
Local reports say the soldiers were skiing in the Petit Argentier [peh-TEET-ahr-zhen-tee-AY] area at a height of 2, 200 meters when they were caught up in the avalanche. Search dogs and helicopters immediately began looking for the soldiers. About 10 of the military team were found. But five of them had gone into cardiac arrest and died. The nationalities of the victims were not known yet. The group were members of the second Foreign Engineer Regiment based at Saint-Christol [san-kris-TOHL] in southern France's national center for mountain warfare at Modane.
